When you get your car repaired at an auto body shop, you usually sign an agreement that states in the fine print that the auto body shop can hold your car until the bill is paid in full.

Of course, the agreement is there to protect the auto body shop from someone skipping on payment. If there are unusual circumstances regarding getting the bill paid that are reasonable, most auto body shops are willing to discuss it with you.
